EXPERIMENTS

THE ALGORITHM

Summer 2023

SUMMARY

AI image generation represents a remarkable technological feat, but its inherent biases pose ethical challenges. As generative AI engines learn from large content sets, the biases ingrained in these datasets inevitably find their way into the AI-generated outputs.

Art can create opportunity for conversation that can get people thinking and discussing issues. With the help of art we can encourage AI researchers and developers to continuously refine their systems, hopefully leading to more fair, inclusive, and unbiased technologies in the future.

ALL WOMEN

For my first exploration I performed a simple repeated prompt to “/imagine a portrait of a woman” – the output was striking, the characters are almost all white women, they are not too young, and also not too old, and are not under or over-weight.  I complied a short video of the first few hundred renderings.

I would be interested in filling a gallery wall with tens of thousands of these images -cycling through portraits until it hits the 4 billion representing the world population of women.  This illustrating and symbolizing the flaws in the enormous datasets that have been used to create these renderings, the power of these engines to create inifinte copies, and also the size of the possibilities and opportunity at hand.

This project is in its earliest stages, I’d appreciate your questions, feedback and connections.
